The FreeStore is an initiative of Transition Town Media. What is that? Transition Town Media is a community based initiative focused on building community resilience in the face of global economic and environmental challenges that are impacting many in the Media area and all over the world. With hundreds of members in Media, we are working to effect change in our community that will, in the end, make everyone happier, healthier, and more secure in meeting their basic needs.
By becoming part of the international Transition Movement and Pennsylvania’s first Transition Town, we are helping the Media area change, at the community level, to a more local and resilient future.
Transition efforts are designed to result in a life that is more fulfilling, more socially connected and more equitable than the one we have today. The model is based on a loose set of real world principles and practices that reduce carbon emissions and build community resilience.
We recognize the following:
We live in an age of unprecedented change. Climate change, global economic instability, overpopulation, erosion of community, declining biodiversity, and resource wars have all stemmed from the availability of cheap, non-renewable fossil fuels.
We want Media to be able to feed and sustain itself, while creating local jobs and protecting our resources and environment. Ultimately, we envision Media better able to insulate itself from global shocks — whether they’re caused by oil prices, climate change, or economic crises like the one we say in 2008.

We recognize the following:
- Peak oil, climate change, and economic instability require urgent action
- Adaptation to a world with less oil is inevitable
- It is better to plan and be prepared than be taken by surprise
- Our Industrial and highly "supply-chain-based" society has lost the resilience to be able to cope with shocks to its systems
- We have to act together and we have to act now
- We must negotiate our way forward, through these changes, using all our skill, ingenuity, and intelligence
- Using our creativity and cooperation to unleash the collective genius within our local communities will lead to a more abundant, connected and healthier future for all
- It is up to local communities to step into a leadership position, begin working now to cope with peak oil, climate change, and economic instability
- Together, we can and will make a difference
